Will the new electric car 48V voltage standard be a game changer for Tesla's stock price?

by 아침거인 2023. 4. 16.

Tesla announced at the Investor Day event held on the 1st that they will change the voltage of the electronic devices of their upcoming electric cars from the current 12V to 48V. This seems to be Tesla's firm determination to establish a unique electric vehicle ecosystem in the industry by changing the industry standard of 12V to 48V in the future.

As a result, at the investor day event held on the 1st of this month, Tesla announced that it will change the voltage of the electronic components of its upcoming electric cars from the current 12V to 48V. This reflects Tesla's strong commitment to establishing an independent electric vehicle ecosystem in the industry by changing the industry standard of 12V to 48V.

The upcoming Cybertruck, which is scheduled to be released in the second half of this year, will also use the 48V voltage, which will reduce the weight of the vehicle's wiring and decrease power loss (3-7%) as increasing the voltage from 12V to 48V reduces the current by one quarter under the same power conditions.

Reducing power loss in general vehicle components such as lighting, infotainment, and steering, as well as improving the efficiency of air conditioning (HVAC) systems and power conversion systems, could be possible through this reduction of power loss. Additionally, Tesla plans to apply 48V to its humanoid robot, Optimus, not just to electric cars.

Tesla has been on a low-cost offensive by announcing three price reductions already this year, selling 167,000 vehicles in markets outside of China by February, a 60.5% increase from a year ago. Tesla sold more than 70,000 units more than second-ranked Volkswagen and has firmly secured its position as the top electric vehicle maker.

In contrast, Hyundai Motor Group fell to fourth place, selling 66,800 units, a 6.4% decrease from a year ago. With this dominant position, Tesla announced plans to raise the voltage of its electric cars from the current 12 volts to 48 volts, which will further strengthen its grip on the automotive parts industry ecosystem.

In fact, it is interpreted that Tesla has completed negotiations with parts companies to apply new specifications of parts at reasonable costs at the stage where it has completed the preparation for Cybertruck production in the second half of the year. This indicates that Tesla, which lacked influence over the existing automotive parts industry, has established its own parts ecosystem and can now procure parts stably.

While there is confidence in the advantages of using 48V voltage, it is expected that the burden of chasing existing complete car manufacturers will increase in the future, and some complete car companies are expected to take a long time to make the practical transition to 48V due to organizational inertia resulting from long-term cooperation with multiple parts companies, according to industry experts and researchers analyzing the current situation.

The application of these changes inevitably involves parts supply chain and organizational changes in development and procurement for actual completed car companies, and this can be interpreted as Tesla's competitive advantage finally shining through. This is expected to be sufficient material to lift Tesla's stock price, which has been in a downward trend for a long time. It can also be seen as a symbolic case that shows Tesla's market dominance and strategic vertical modeling construction to existing completed car companies.
